Ethylene gas

All fruits, vegetables and flowers produce ethylene gas in varying amounts.  Damaged plants or flowers, in the process of spoiling, generate even higher levels of ethylene gas.  Exhaust fumes from autos, buses, trucks and forklifts contain ethylene and other gases that will adversely effect your floral products.

Experts estimate that up to 30% of floral products perish prematurely due to the harmful effects of ethylene gas.  You have probably seen the effects of ethylene gas on your own floral inventory and not realized the cause of the damages.  Premature aging of flowers, curling of leaves, dropping florets, withered petal tips, loss of deep color, and yellowing are just some of the symptoms caused by exposure to elevated ethylene gas concentrations.

FLORAL GUARD’S active ingredient oxidizes ethylene gas on contact and binds the harmless byproduct of this reaction within a porous, purple pellet.  FLORAL GUARD media has a built in color indicator;  as the medium removes the ethylene gas from the cooler, the pellets slowly undergo a color change from purple to lighter shades of pink , then tan and eventually dark brown.  When sample pellets are crushed and there is only a slight pink color in the center or none at all, then it is time to change out the medium.

The FLORAL GUARD media was tested at a leading mid-west university’s horticultural department for its ethylene removal efficiency.  The results show how rapidly FLORAL GUARD removed a concentration of ethylene gas that would probably be 100 times greater than any ever encountered in a retail florist cooler.
